Argo Featured Reading #11: Stuart Ross & Greg Santos

I am so thrilled about this upcoming reading with Stuart Ross at Argo Bookshop. I can hardly keep myself from exploding. I haven't read from The Emperor's Sofa in Montreal since it was originally launched back in April of 2011. Now that I've moved back, it's a bit of a homecoming for me. I'm also really, really looking forward to reading with Stuart and getting my hands on his new book, You Exist. Details Follow. Please come out and say hello. This reading is going to be mega epic.

Considered to be Canada’s foremost writer of the surreal, Stuart Ross will be reading at the Argo from his seventh full-length collection of poetry,You Exist. Details Follow. (Anvil Press, 2012) alongside the Ashberyian ironies and McGimpseyian pleasures of Greg Santos and his latest collection, The Emperor’s Sofa (DC Books, 2010).

About Stuart Ross's latest book:
In his seventh full-length poetry collection You Exist. Details Follow., Stuart Ross veers in opposite directions: narrative confessional poems, and works that might be considered abstract expressionist, and a lot both in between and beyond those boundaries. Each poem breathes with the signature weirdness, the sharp wit, and gentle awe that Ross is known for. Here you’ll find confounding centos, fractured sonnets, delirious lists, poems composed through surrealist strategies, a new addition toRoss’s autobiographical Razovsky series, and more.

About Stuart Ross:
Stuart Ross is a poet, fiction writer, and essayist. He is the author of about a dozen books and countless chapbooks. His story collection Buying Cigarettes for the Dog won the 2010 ReLit Award for Short Fiction. Stuart is the fiction and poetry editor for This Magazine, a regular columnist for subTerrain, and has his own imprint, a stuart ross book, at Mansfield Press. He was the 2010 Writer in Residence at Queen's University, and has led writing workshops across the country.

About Greg Santos's book:
The Emperor’s Sofa is a road trip that veers smoothly from the elegiac to the dubious; from faraway hotel rooms to quiet rides in the country, from perfect strangers to infomercials at 4 AM... As Todd Swift wrote, Greg Santos’ poems are the stuff of "deranged heroes and unmasked anti-heroic marvels – funny, poignant, and profound."

About Greg Santos:
Greg Santos was born and raised in Montreal. He has studied at Mount Allison (Sackville, NB), Concordia (Montreal, QC), Columbia (New York, NY) universities, and received an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School (New York, NY). His writing has appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies, includings McSweeney's, Nthposition, The Best American Poetry, The Feathertale Review, Matrix, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, Rogue Stimulus (Mansfield Press, 2010), The Future Hygienic (PistolPress, 2009), Dingers: Contemporary Baseball Writing (DC Books, 2007), and as a featured 'Parliamentary Poem of the Week' selection. He is also the author of the chapbook Tweet Tweet Tweet (Corrupt Press, 2011). He currently works as a writing instructor and is the poetry co-editor for the Quebec Writers' Federation's online literary magazine carte blanche.

LPG

I was lucky to have my debut poetry collection published a couple of years ago. Thanks to LPG (Literary Press Group of Canada) it was distributed around bookstores and libraries throughout Canada, as well as internationally through online booksellers and other mediums.

On June 4, 2012 it was announced that the Department of Canadian Heritage has ended its financial support of LPG's activities for the fiscal year that began this past April, essentially starting the process of shutting down the sales force for my publisher and a large majority of independent Canadian publishers throughout the country.

While, of course, books will continue to be published, this will certainly make it much more difficult for publishers around the country to distribute and market new titles to you readers out there. First it was cuts to the CBC and the National Film Board. Now this. Ugh. This is sad and unsettling news for those of us who create, love, and support Canadian literature.

If you want to help and have a Conservative MP in your region or your riding, please consider sending them a note telling them what this decision means to you.

Thank you for reading.

THE EMPEROR'S SOFA reviewed by Cha

"Wow!" is my reaction to Greg Santos' three-part collection, The Emperor's Sofa. Originality raises its ornery head in every piece, and yet somehow the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Santos pays tribute to various modern North American poets and shares several traits with members of that illustrious tribe: snapping wit, irony, urban angst, the rhythms of everyday speech (with a slight Canadian accent) and a mordant relish in the trappings of consumerism...

The Emperor's Sofa gets some love all the way from Hong Kong with a new review from the newest issue of Cha: An Asian Literary Journal (#16). The Emperor is pleased.

Please check out the review HERE.

Thank you, Tammy Ho Lai-Ming, Eddie Tay, Pauline Burton, and the rest of the Cha gang.

TWEET TWEET TWEET by Greg Santos: Coming Fall 2011

Ok, lots of cool stuff going on right now. Here's a recap:

1) Beach Sloth wrote a nice review of THE EMPEROR'S SOFA HERE.

2) I was lucky enough to meet said mysterious Beach Sloth in person at the epic kickoff to Steve Roggenbuck and Poncho Peligroso's east coast tour, also met and read with fellow Montrealer Guillaume Morrissette, Spencer Madsen, Mike Bushnell, Johnny Vulpine, and Ras Mashramani, among other super writers. I feel all warm and fuzzy, and a little exhausted after that reading.

3) My book also made the longlist for the ReLit Awards. Cross your fingers and toes for me.

4) Phew. But wait, there's more! I have some special poetry news: Corrupt Press (Paris, France) is gonna publish my chapbook TWEET TWEET TWEET mid-fall 2011. I'm pretty psyched. The majority of the poems in my forthcoming chapbook were written while I was living in Paris the past year. Corrupt Press has published the likes of France-based superstars, Rufo Quintavalle, Jennifer K. Dick, and more. Yay. Will provide updates when I can.

All right, I'm gonna celebrate with a bubbly glass of ginger ale.

Thanks for reading, you beautiful people, you.

Paris Roundup

My sojourn to Paris has come to an end and I'm typing this among my boxes of books and half-empty suitcases in my New Haven apartment.

It was a wild nine months:

1) I did some translation work for a French law-firm's website, taught English classes to my daughter's pediatrician, and regularly tutored French teenagers.

2) I joined the editorial staff (as a poetry editor) for the awesome Paris-based journal, Upstairs at Duroc.

3) There were so many wonderful poets and writers that I was lucky enough to meet and spend time with, including Paula Bohince, Barbara Beck, Rufo Quintavalle, Lisa Pasold, Jennifer K. Dick, Nina Karacosta, Steve Dalachinsky, Dylan Harris, John Stiles, and Todd Swift.

4) The Emperor's Sofa World Tour took me to Montreal, Paris, Berlin, and London. Thanks to everyone who made those readings possible, including my publisher DC Books, Dylan Harris, Barbara Beck, the editors at SAND Journal, and my dear friend Joshua Levy.

What's next for me now that I'm back in North America? Unpacking and getting over my jet lag, first of all. But I have some cool announcements to make that I'll share over the next couple of days.

So, stay tuned for my first announcement TOMORROW AUGUST 2!!!

Au revoir, Paris. Bonjour, New Haven!

Thanks for reading.

THE EMPEROR'S SOFA reviewed by John Stiles

"I appreciate this book, especially the idea of the slightly awkward, at odds with the world, Emperor soul rattling around in his castle, proclaiming his love, his heart for the world, from his iron prison." - John Stiles

John Stiles (pictured above), the Nova Scotia-born poet, novelist, and filmmaker, who now calls London, England home, kindly attended my June 4th reading at Goodenough College in London.

He has written a mighty generous and lovely write up of the reading and of my book The Emperor's Sofa on his website, How Yah Doon?.

He also posted two newer poems of mine.

Please check it all out HERE.

Thank you so much, John.

The Emperor's Sofa in Berlin Roundup

On June 4th, 2011, me and six other poets/editors affiliated with the Paris-based journal Upstairs at Duroc were invited to read in Berlin by Berlin's English literary journal, SAND. We started off the afternoon with an arts fair held at Etsy Labs.

Ssshhhhh. Don't disturb him. He' s reading my book...

That evening we made our way to our reading at Cafe Bohemie where I got to try a mean plate of spaetzle. Here are some Paris poets' poetry swag sexily draped over a piano. Purrrr...

The crowd being warmed up by Becky Crook, editor of SAND.

Me. Reading from The Emperor's Sofa. The other featured readers were Barbara Beck, Jonathan Wonham, Nina Karacosta, Joe Ross, and Rufo Quintavalle.

A big thank you to the peeps at SAND for their warmth and hospitality, and for everyone who made it out to hear us read. It was wunderbar!

Stay tuned for info about my forthcoming reading in London, England on June 22nd.

Tschuss!
