It's that time of the year again where I emerge from the darkness and return to post on this trusty blog.<br />

Now I know I don't regularly post here anymore. That does make me a little bit sad, so I'm hoping to change that in 2018! It might not be every week, but here's to making a return to the blogosphere!<br />
<br />

<br />
So, in this spirit, I would like to continue the tradition of writing up a roundup of what I've been up to in 2017 and my End of the Year Reading List. I can sometimes forget to count my blessings, so writing a list like this is a good way to remember all the things I am grateful for.<br />
<br />
I'm still hard at work on my manuscript-in-progress devoted to the life and work of Beaver Hall Group member, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Savage_(artist)">Anne Savage</a>, but I'm happy to say that I'm in the piecing the manuscript together stage and starting to send pieces from it out to journals and contests.<br />
<br />
I continued to lead various workshops around Montreal, partnering with <a href="http://www.wordstochange.org/quebec-roots-strengthening-communities/">Blue Metropolis' Quebec Roots</a> project for the first time, as well as continuing to work with <a href="http://www.vallummag.com/outreach.html">VSEAL</a>, <i><a href="http://www.vallummag.com/">Vallum Magazine</a></i>'s Outreach Program. I also became a mentor through the Montreal-based arts mentorship startup, <i><a href="https://mentorly.co/">Mentorly</a></i>. <br />
I taught <a href="https://courses.thomasmore.qc.ca/fall-2017-imaginative-poetry-writing-writing-workshop/">Imaginative Poetry Writing at the Thomas More Institute </a>this past fall, inspired by my experiences learning under the late <a href="http://www.paulvioli.com/">Paul Violi </a>in New York at Columbia University and at The New School. It's been my dream to develop this course and it was probably one of the most fun experiences I've ever had as a teacher!<br />
<br />
Looking forward to 2018, I'm teaching <a href="https://courses.thomasmore.qc.ca/winter-2018-basic-essay-writing-writing-workshops-2/">Basic Essay Writing</a> at the Thomas More Institute again this winter, and I have several projects lined up, including a very special one in partnership with <i><a href="http://acontainer.co/">Container</a></i> (stay tuned for more details on that soon)!<br />
<br />
I am particularly thrilled that my forthcoming poetry collection, <i>Blackbirds</i>, is being published as a pamphlet in Spring 2018 through London-based, <a href="https://store.eyewearpublishing.com/">Eyewear Publishing</a>! I'm planning on making my way to England for the launch, so stay tuned for more event details soon!<br />
<br />
Oh, of course, I can't forget that my dear daughter, Rosemary, is also a published poet now, too! Her poem "Candy Bandits", written when she was six, appears in the <a href="https://www.rattle.com/children/y2018/"><i>2018 Rattle Young Poets Anthology</i></a>! We're so so proud of her!<br />

That being said, I'd like to keep up my End of the Year Reading List and add a roundup of some of my happenings in 2016. It was a year filled with health-related lows and the losses of my dear grandparents. But it was also a year of wild highs, with me being awarded a <a href="https://www.calq.gouv.qc.ca/">CALQ</a> Research & Creation Grant for a new book project I'm excited to dive into the new year and getting a new teaching position that will be starting in January, 2017.<br />

<i><a href="http://dcbooks.ca/rabbitPunch.html">Rabbit Punch!</a></i>, my second collection of poetry with <a href="http://dcbooks.ca/">DC Books</a> just dropped at the beginning of May 2014, so I'm still processing the fallout from that. Getting a book ready has actually been mentally exhausting, on top of a whole other slew of things going on, so right now I'm doing my best to recharge my batteries and read, read, read. There are some books by local Montreal authors that are piled up next to my bedside table that I'm really excited about reading: <i>Fire and Sage</i> by Moe Clark, <i>Waiting for the Man</i> by Arjun Basu, <i>Peeling Rambutan </i>by Gillian Sze, <i>New Tab</i> by Guillaume Morrisette, and <i>I Am Here </i>by Ashley Opheim. I just finished reading Jay Winston Ritchie's new book, the awesomely titled <i>How to Appear Perfectly Indifferent While Crying</i> and it is one of my new favourite things. My work right now is to feed my brain with fodder so I can write later.</div>

<b>How does my work differ from others of its genre?</b></div>

You know that goofy line from the trailer for the movie <a href="http://youtu.be/Ob9J3kCELXE">Hellboy</a>: "In the absence of light, darkness prevails." I'd like to think that my poetry provides a little bit of lightness in the dark; I'm the night light of poetry.</div>

<b>Why do I write what I do?</b></div>

Poetry is a mystery that I'm constantly trying to make sense of like how they get the caramel into a Caramilk bar or how come Patrick Stewart doesn't age. I write poetry to play with words. I write poetry to challenge what people consider poetry to be. I write poetry because of people who say I should be doing anything else but write poetry. I write poetry to make sense of the odd deep sea fish that bounce around inside my skull. I write poetry because the first poetry workshop I ever did was with <a href="http://mcgimpsey.tumblr.com/">David McGimpsey</a> at Concordia University and I saw the type of work that he did, his contagious enthusiasm for poetry, his deep seriousness for the art form despite all the funny, and it made me and continues to make me want to learn everything I can about the art of poetry.</div>

<b>How does your writing process work?</b></div>

I write when I can. I don't have a regular writing process or schedule. I embrace the chaos. More often than not, I write after my two kids and wife are asleep. When I hear the hum of the dishwasher and it's dark, then I know it's time to write.</div>

This poem actually captured how I've been feeling about this city's seemingly never-ending winter.
