Ashbery and Blaser Win Griffin Prizes for Poetry

The prestigious Canadian Griffin Prizes (offering $50,000 to the best book of Canadian poetry and $50,000 to the best book of international poetry published in the last year) have been awarded to Robin Blaser and John Ashbery.

I'm not as familiar with Blaser's work but Ashbery has had a profound effect on my own writing over the past couple of years and I'm still willing to say he's one of the greatest living poets right now so kudos to the Griffin judges for honoring the man.

Hopefully the Griffin prize brings greater exposure to the two winners but also to the nominees (including Elaine Equi -who teaches at The New School - and David McFadden) who are also formidable poets in their own right and deserve to be read, awards or not.

More here.
