Giller Prize nominations

After narrowing the choices down to a long list of 15 - which included works by well known writers like Wayne Johnston (Colony of Unrequited Dreams, The Divine Ryans), Douglas Coupland (Generation X, Life After God) and David Adam Richards - yesterday the shortlist for Canada's top literary prize was announced, apparently eliciting gasps in the process. The big surprise was that all five candidates are largely unknowns and published by small or medium-sized presses. This is a great opportunity for people to discover works by authors and publishers they wouldn't normally read.

Here is the final short list for 2006 Scotiabank Giller Prize for excellence in Canadian English-language literature:

-De Niro's Game, by Rawi Hage (House of Anansi).

-Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, by Vincent Lam (Doubleday Canada).

-The Perfect Circle, by Pascale Quiviger (Cormorant).

-The Immaculate Conception, by Gaétan Soucy (House of Anansi).

-Home Schooling, by Carol Windley (Cormorant).
