Tomorrow I'm going to see Matthea Harvey and Christian Hawkey, two New York poets who are going to be holding a panel discussion on writing, publishing, and teaching - three topics I've very interested in pursuing careerwise and in the evening I'll be going to see Salmon Rushie.

I've never read any of Mr. Rushdie's work but maybe I'll be inspired to pick up one of his books after hearing him talk. I know I had never heard of Sebastian Barry before last Friday but now I'm completely imerssed in his recent novel, A Long Long Way.

Matthea Harvey is the author of two books of poetry, Pity the Bathtub Its Forced Embrace of the Human Form (Alice James Books, 2000) and Sad Little Breathing Machine (Graywolf, 2004). She is the poetry editor of American Letters & Commentary and a contributing editor for BOMB and jubilant. Educated at Harvard College and a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, she has taught at Warren Wilson, the Pratt Institute, and the University of Houston, and currently teaches at Sarah Lawrence College. She lives in Brooklyn.

Christian Hawkey's first book of poems, The Book of Funnels, was published by Verse Press (2004). He is a graduate of the MFA program at the University of Massachusetts and an Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing at the Pratt Institute in New York City. His poems have appeared in such journals as the Colorado Review, Volt , the Denver Quarterly, the American Poetry Review, and the Paris Review. In 2000 he co-founded the international poetry journal, jubilat. He lives in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn.
