Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great long weekend (well here in Canada anyway). I had an amazing time with Maryn but my only complaint is that it went by too fast. I arrived to Sackville on Friday and Maryn had a nice picnic supper ready for me (wine, cheese, baguette), then her parents arrived and picked us up.
We drove to St. Martin's, New Brunswick and that took I believe an hour and a half to two hours to get there. I couldn't really appreciate the landscape on the way that evening because it was so dark but once we got out of the car when we arrived to Stoney Brook, I was speechless. Stoney Brook was named by Maryn's grandfather J.E. March when he discovered a brook, some waterfalls on his land in the forest and built a cabin, bridges, a camp area, and much more. Since then the area has expanded and it is breathtaking. I couldn't agree more after I was told that people consider that area of Canada "God's country".
The area is in the forest and secluded from a city so at night the stars are visible very easily without artificial lights to get in the way and it is so quiet that the silence is almost frightening when you just stop and listen to the sounds of nature. I was ecstatic to be there and with Maryn at the same time.
The next day Maryn and I woke up early to explore the land. We went into the forest to explore the brook, and to get up close to the waterfalls. We were lucky to be there last weekend because the temperature was perfect. The sun was shining brightly and it was just like summer weather. Not only that but the leaves had just started to change so the colours of the trees were hot red, orange, and yellow. We then climbed the mountain to the lookout peak and marveled at the view. I felt so lucky to be able to see this place as well as to hear all about Maryn's family history and to see where she spent her childhood.
Eventually we made our way back and got ready for Maryn's cousin Nathalie's wedding which was at four in the afternoon. I was excited because not only was I going to be able to see my first wedding but I was also able to meet Maryn's family. The ceremony was beautiful, and there was about one hundred and fifty people in the church. You could imagine how hard it was to try and remember everyone's name :)
The reception afterward was lots of fun. Jim, Maryn's dad provided the musical entertainment, and there was a delicious buffet with home cooked food, dancing, and lots of excursions to the park to get fresh air. We decided not to continue going to the park after Maryn got a little sick from swinging too often. I guess we're not as hard-stomached as when we were kids. Although we did play a rousing game of hide and go seek with Maryn's little cousin Charlotte. Man, kids have a lot of energy...
We almost had a problem when we were leaving to go back to the cabin because the car had a flat tire but luckily lots of the men were watching one of the big races on TV in the fire house near where we stopped the car. It was as if they sensed the flat tire and about five guys came scurrying out of the firehouse, leaping over rails to come to see what the problem was. The tire must have been changed in less than fifteen minutes and then when it was done, they left just as fast as they came, leaping over rails and stairs to go back to watch the race. I was very impressed.
On Sunday we said goodbye to Stoney Brook and made our way to Sackville. Along the way Maryn's parents stopped the car in Moncton and we went to Champlain mall to do a little window shopping which was lots of fun and then got dropped off at Mount Allison. That evening we went out to supper at Marshland's Inn and I had a great Thanksgiving meal complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, pumpkin pie, the works. Good food, and great company. What else could anyone ask for? When we went back to Harper we watched the movie "Baraka" which I brought from home and we watched it with Grey, and Andre, two of my old friends from the dorm.
On Monday, Maryn and I met Craig and got to get a tour of his apartment and we then went out to lunch at "The Olive Branch" for a nice meal. It was great to see him, I thought I wasn't going to see him again for a long time since he graduated last May. We caught up and had a great time.
My plane left at 6:20 and I wasn't that happy to be leaving since that meant going back to school but I was glad to have been able to have such a great weekend. I couldn't have asked for a better break. Now I'm just going to have to wait for Maryn to come in December to Montreal and to have another great visit. Until then Maryn, I miss you! :)
Well that's about it for today folks. A la prochaine!
