IRL Poetry Tour Photos and Poetry by Emily Dickinson

1) If you haven't seen them, HERE are some photos from the IRL Poetry Tour kickoff that happened on August 6th that featured myself, Steve Roggenbuck, Poncho Peligroso, Mike Bushnell, Guillaume Morrissette, and a whole slew of awesome poets. Thanks to the peeps at We Who Are About To Die for the coverage. If you click through them you can see my plaiderrific self (I think Poncho and I shop at the same plaid store...) as well as a nice shot of The Emperor's Sofa.

2) Speaking of Roggenbuck, Steve-o has launched his Poetry by Emily Dickinson website. Please check it out HERE.

I submitted some tweets a few months back and they've been remixed into a collaborative poem titled "Tonight We Dine On Salad". Please check it out HERE.

Interested in participating? Here's some more info:

Today is the launch of the website Poetry by Emily Dickinson, a collaborative project to steal Google traffic from a dead writer & redirect it to living writers collaborating online. You can participate in 3 ways:

1. Tweet lines of poetry including the tag “#poetrybyemilydickinson.”

2. Remix/combine people’s tweets into longer texts and submit them to poetrybyemilydickinson.com/submit

3. Link the phrase “poetry by emily dickinson” to this website, poetrybyemilydickinson.com, so it gradually rises in search results.

You can also follow Poetry by Emily Dickinson on Twitter. Thank you very much. Get in my <3.

Epistle to New York

I remember having bad vegetable dumplings with Ben, Alina, Lia, Lauren, and Mollye. The place looked like a rectangle. From the windows it seemed like they only sold trays and cups.

I remember Alina bicycling into a crowd of people, her blue blouse flapping in the crisp autumn evening before disappearing.

I remember walking back from Café Loup with Ben and grabbing cheese fries and hot dogs at Papaya Dog.

I remember going to Papaya Dog one night and being completely flabbergasted by an angry guy who was upset because they wouldn’t let his girlfriend use the restroom and he told the African American cook behind the counter to “Go back to Africa.”

I remember walking by either beautiful people or the raging mad.

I remember we went to the bad dumpling place because someone outside said “It’s good. Really good.” And we believed him.

I remember talking about how bad it was to eat greasy late-night snacks, yet still doing it.

I remember having strong coffee and soy milk while sitting cross-legged on Ben’s apartment floor.

I remember Ben asking me to buy him some rice crackers and being worried I bought the wrong kind and at the same corner store being asked if I was from India.

I remember hearing sounds coming from one of the apartments near Ben’s and him saying, “I’m not sure if she’s masturbating or is just crazy.”

I remember having pastrami on rye with Ben at Katz’s Deli and feeling both at home and homesick for Schwartz’s Montreal smoked meat.

B.C. Edwards is the reigning Literary Death Match Champ!

B.C. Edwards (pax americana's very own Prose Editor) took on all-comers and defeated the likes of Heidi Julavits and Cheryl Wagner to become the new reigning Literary Death Match champ! Congrats, Carter!

Deemed the unluckiest Literary Death Match of them all, NYC Ep. 13 was anything but. A steamy and stuffed Pianos was the site of a literary night of festive genius, in which B.C. Edwards won a fierce final battle of “Baseball Chopstick War” against co-finalist Cheryl Wagner by a final tally of 6-3. Edwards’ chopstick talents etched his name into the annals of LDM history.

Check out the full coverage of last night's craziness here.

Oulipo in New York Toons

Jean-Jacques Poucel, Yale associate French professor and chief organizer of the recent Oulipo in New York festivities was kind enough to send me a link to some pretty rad sketches of the Oulipians by T. Motley from the New School event I attended at the beginning of the month. I think it captured their essence pretty well, no? See more sketches here.

More:

-Here's a lame review from Artforum (the journalist can't seem to get anyone's name straight!) of the otherwise entertaining evening.

-Jacques Roubaud reading some of his work here.

-Oulipo in Drunken Boat.

Oulipo in New York

Although this may be April Fool's Day, this is no joke. At last, The New School, Yale, and Columbia join forces to create an unholy union of, um, Oulipo literary goodness:

The Oulipo, Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle, is a collective of writers and mathematicians founded in 1960 by François Le Lionnais and Raymond Queneau. Since its creation, the Oulipo group explores alternative ways of writing fiction and poetry, by using patterns and constraints often inspired from mathematical models, but always in a playful spirit. Its members include Marcel Bénabou, Anne Garréta, Hervé Le Tellier, Ian Monk, Jacques Roubaud, and American author Harry Mathews, all of whom will be in New York for three days of readings, lectures, writing workshops and book signings.

Some events include:

April 1st, 7-8:30pm

Oulipo reading followed by book signings, in English

The New School, Tishman Auditorium, 66 W 12th Street, NYC - More Info

April 2nd, 12-2pm

Oulip, Nouveaux Sentiers, Nouveaux Chantiers, a roundtable discussion in French

Maison Française of Columbia University, Broadway at West 116th Street, NYC - More info

Cosponsored by the Poet's House, the French Embassy, Columbia University, Yale University, and the New School Writing Program. Oulipo in New York is being held from April 1-4, 2009 at several venues throughout New York City. All events are free and open to the public. For more information on this and other events, please visit www.frenchculture.org.

Poet Takes Vow of Silence

Stavros Lambrakis, a poet friend of mine has decided to take a vow of silence and record his experience on a blog. I bumped into Stavros the other day in New York and I really couldn't figure out why he wasn't saying anything - cause normally he's a pretty chatty cat.

Here's some press on his experiment.

And click here to read about Stavros's philosophy of silence in his own words.
